BURST*008 was commissioned by MoMA and installed as part of the exhibition Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling. Built in just ten weeks, four off-site and six on-site, the project evolved from the award-winning BURST*003, constructed several years earlier in North Haven, Australia. At MoMA, the BURST* identity expanded beyond its original “sunburst” name, derived from the surface-applied flower graphic, to become both a functional skylight and a literal construction method: the structural ribs burst open on site before being lowered onto the moment frames anchoring the house to the ground.

Further innovations in BURST*008 include a prefabricated structural insulated panel (SIP) skin system that provides a highly insulated self-supporting architectural envelope. As an alternative to mass-produced versions of domestic life that reduce prefab houses to varying arrangements of boxes, each BURST* iteration generates spatial individuality, expanding the architectural potential of affordable, prefabricated construction. The system functions like a kit of parts, enabling the creation of distinct, customized homes from small, interlocking components.
