This project was built at The Architectural League as part of new New York 3, the League’s annual exhibition of current work around New York. The project developed out of one important constraint: nothing could touch the existing gallery walls. The challenge then became to design something that was both display space for the planned exhibition materials and something that was a structure in itself so as not to damage the gallery walls.

The piece ultimately used the exhibition materials as part of the structure. The installation is constructed from pre-cut, angle-notched pieces of three inch thick foam – the ribs, and the drawings are mounted onto three inch foam – the skin. Each rib snaps into another and is then locked in place with the skin pieces, creating a tensile structure that is wholly self-supporting.
