The owner of this 2500 sq ft New York loft lost six west-facing windows when a development was built next door. To compensate for that loss of light, the apartment was fitted with large, brisole sliding walls so that the master bedroom and the kitchen can open up onto the main living space and gain access to the light from the rest of the apartment. A further intervention to increase the open, light feeling of the space was the addition of a backlit perforated metal on one side of the apartment corridor to give a soft, overall glow to the apartment, returning light to the space. The owner employed an inventive use of materials, with a collection old industrial fixtures and a number of original Jean Prouvé and Alvar Aalto pieces.
